Flames of Our Love

By Karen

How do I put into words how much you mean to me?
I vividly remember the time we first met...

As my horse galloped along the floral meadow, I looked up to find you riding just over the crest of the hill. The setting sun created a silhouette that was a fitting background for a man so handsome as you. Smiling, I rode toward you trying to think of something to say that would make it appear as if I were not being so forthright, but I wanted to know you. Something made me feel that we were destined to meet.

I had overheard the people of the village talking about you, of the hard life you had lived, and of the war that had almost taken your life. Studying you, it did not appear that you could have been through anything so trying. Sensing my approach, you looked up with such an endearing gaze. Your bold features, those of a man of strength, had a gentleness that put me at ease. The twinkle in your eyes and wondrous smile, alone, sent sensations through me that I struggled to contain.

So began our conversations that, at times, lasted well into the early morning hours. A man of such honor and integrity I had not known until you came into my life. You had to but enter a room for my heart to flutter with the love that had grown as time passed. The gaze of such a handsome man that peaked my interest, in the beginning, was soon surpassed by your kind and gentle ways. We bonded so intensely that I had no doubt we would share a lifetime of committed love.

The blissful day that you proposed to me is so etched in my heart and mind. Riding our horses near the waters edge, I wondered why you seemed to follow rather than ride beside me as you had always done. As I turned to see if anything was wrong, I remember how you then lifted the rose that held the glowing band of gold on a leaf of the stem. Such was your way, of surprising me when I least expected it. You, the man I cherish.

How our children seem to look so much like you. The oldest, our daughter, fair-minded, loving, and gentle in her ways. And our son, how he adopted your values and passions in life. I often wonder how I could be so lucky to have been blessed with a family such as ours. My prayers will be answered if our children can maintain the strength of commitment that we have had throughout the years. How I adore you for being there for us.

Our children now have beautiful children of their own. Though the years have gone by, it only seems like yesterday when I glanced and saw you along the hillcrest--the man who won my heart. It has been a year since you took your place with the angels above. You will forever live in my heart. I journal my thoughts only as a token of my love for you, love of all loves. I will always be close to you, my darling, for I will always remember the flames of our love.
